This mid-20th century French apothecary mortar and pestle is a refined example of simple, utilitarian design. Crafted from glazed white porcelain, the mortar features a broad, rounded form with a pronounced pouring spout, offering both balance and functionality. The accompanying pestle is smoothly shaped to rest comfortably in the hand. Once used by a village pharmacist or herbalist to grind medicinal herbs and compounds, the piece now carries gentle signs of age that lend it a warm, authentic character.
This piece is marked with "GDV Bruère," referring to Girault, Demay et Vignelet, a French company renowned for producing porcelain mortars for pharmacies and laboratories. Based in Bruère in central France, GDV later became Porcelaine d’Avignon and is now known as Avignon Céramic, continuing to lead in ceramic innovation to this day.
This set blends practical craftsmanship with quiet elegance. Its timeless form and patina make it a charming decorative accent. Use it in the kitchen to grind basil or garlic for the beloved Provençal dishes "pistou" or "aïoli"!
