A superb green-glazed fruit bowl from the mid-twentieth century. It features pretty openwork and little fig leaves. Although unsigned, the design, quality and vibrant green glaze indicate that it is from Vallauris.
The ceramics industry in Vallauris, a town on the French Riviera, experienced a remarkable resurgence in the mid-20th century, catalyzed by Pablo Picasso's arrival in 1946. Collaborating with the Madoura workshop, Picasso produced thousands of ceramic pieces, infusing traditional pottery with his innovative artistic style. This attracted other renowned artists like Roger Capron and Robert Picault, who contributed to the town's reputation with their modernist designs and bold techniques. The 1950s and 60s are considered the golden age of Vallauris ceramics, marked by a flourishing community of artists and designers. Today, Vallauris continues to celebrate its ceramic heritage with festivals and exhibitions, honoring the legacy of these influential figures.
