A traditional Provençal cruche (water pitcher) in glazed terracotta, from the Drôme, late 19th century. The wheel-thrown ovoid body rises to a collared neck with twin incised rings and is surmounted by a basket handle arching over the mouth. A small side lug balances the straight spout. The surface is finished in a copper-green glaze, softly mottled, with scattered losses and abrasions revealing the warm clay beneath. Minor nicks to the rim and spout contribute to its authentic, timeworn character. Part of the long tradition of water jugs produced across Provence and the Rhône valley, such pitchers combined utility with quietly handsome forms.
In rural households, they served for drawing and pouring water, the tall bridge handle allowing a secure grip and easy hanging by the well or sink. The generous belly gave stability and helped keep contents cool, while the copper-based glaze ensured a liquid-tight surface. This cruche brings an authentic French country note to a kitchen, scullery, or garden room. It works beautifully as a sculptural accent on open shelving, a farmhouse table, or a console. Style it alone for its honest silhouette and weathered glaze, or use with a liner to hold olive branches, dried hydrangea, or grasses, introducing height and natural texture in a restrained, earthy palette.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
