This 19th-century Orjol is a traditional water jug from the southern regions of France, once commonly used to collect water from village fountains. It stands out with its bulbous form, short spout, and three distinct handles, thoughtfully designed to serve both functional and decorative purposes. The jug also includes a finial-topped lid, featuring a small hole meant for attaching a cord to one of the handles, ensuring the lid doesn't fall or break.
This particular shape is typical of the Roussillon region in the 19th century. This piece is adorned with a hand-painted glaze in pale yellow ochre, complemented by vertical green and black drips that give the piece its decorative charm. Over time, the glazing has developed a natural patina, with small chips and surface wear that enhance its rustic authenticity and historical appeal. While originally used for carrying and storing water, today this Orjol could serve as a unique decorative piece in a contemporary home, adding a touch of French Provençal charm to any space.
