Rare Antique Provençal Daubière in Glazed Earthenware - 9¾"

A substantial 19th-century French daubière in glazed earthenware, likely from the Drôme. Of cauldron form on three rounded feet, it has a recessed lid with a central loop handle, designed to hold water during cooking and temper evaporation. The body is coated in a warm tobacco-brown speckled glaze with darker firing tones, and is embellished with molded handles and an applied garland in relief, featuring three small mask medallions linked by foliate swags. Light glaze losses to the rims and ornaments, expected wear to the feet, and small nicks from use contribute to its authentic, timeworn character.

Daubières were used for slow braising of the Provençal daube, either at the hearth or in a bread oven, their tripod feet allowing them to nestle securely among the embers. The water-filled lid kept the cover cool so steam condensed and returned to the stew, preserving moisture and flavor in an ingenious regional design. Produced in rural potteries of the Rhône valley and Drôme, these robust vessels in earthenware often carried speckled glazes and classical-inspired ornament, a marriage of practical form and rustic refinement. This impressive piece has strong sculptural presence as well as historic charm.
