A striking and rare convex enamel advertising sign for the renowned Galeries Lafayette department store in Paris, produced around 1930 and signed Ed. Jean for the noted enamel manufacturer Edmond Jean. Formed as a large oval plaque in enameled iron, the design features a dramatic gradient of cobalt and sky blue with bold yellow lettering reading “Aux Galeries Lafayette de Paris à 10 minutes,” indicating that the famous department store was only a ten minute walk away.
The vivid palette and sweeping typography create a powerful graphic presence that instantly animates a wall. The surface shows honest wear from decades outdoors, with scattered enamel losses, oxidation, and small dents that contribute to its authentic character. Two holes at the top and bottom allow for easy hanging or wall mounting.
Large in scale and visually bold, the sign reads as both a piece of early twentieth century graphic art and a fragment of retail history. Originally mounted on Paris streets to guide shoppers toward the celebrated department store, this rare survivor captures the bold color and typography of early twentieth century advertising and today brings striking graphic character and authentic Parisian spirit to an interior.
