A rare French tripod vase by Auguste Jean, late 19th century, this alluring piece rises with quiet drama on three hot-applied feet that support a softly smoked, globular body touched with a warm amber cast. Around the everted rim, small applied prunts offer a tactile counterpoint to the smooth glass, while polychrome émail and dorure unfold in richly Persianate bands, ogival borders in turquoise and coral, and graceful floral arabesques punctuated by geometric cartouches. Raised trailed lines spiral across the surface, giving the vessel a sense of movement and depth as the light glances over its contours. The glass retains a gentle, pleasing sheen, and condition is very good, the decoration showing naturally timeworn gilding and minor rubbing to the enamel consistent with age, with no apparent chips or cracks.
Auguste Jean (circa 1840–1890s) was a highly inventive French glassmaker active in the second half of the 19th century, best known for his richly decorated art glass that blended Eastern, Persianate, and Japoniste influences with advanced hot-working techniques. He worked primarily in Paris and exhibited at major international expositions, where his pieces were praised for their technical mastery and exotic, painterly style. His work stands at the forefront of French art glass in the decades preceding Art Nouveau and remains sought after for its rarity, craftsmanship, and distinctive aesthetic vocabulary. This piece was produced for the distinguished Paris department store Le Grand Dépôt, a purveyor of luxury glassware and ceramics, which championed avant-garde décor during the Belle Époque and brought refined French craftsmanship to a wealthy and discerning clientele.
This sculptural vase carries the quiet magnetism of a true rarity, the kind of piece that rewards a collector’s eye and invites a moment of pause. It reads beautifully on a console, étagère, or mantel, where light can slip through the smoked glass and glint across the gilded details, revealing the artistry of its late-19th-century origins. It pairs naturally with Napoleon III and Belle Époque furnishings, gilt bronze, or carved wood, yet its jewel-like presence also brings a refined accent to more minimalist contemporary spaces. Use it as a centerpiece with a few thoughtfully placed stems, or let it stand alone as an objet that speaks to its own history, craftsmanship, and elegant tripod silhouette.
