A charming petite 19th-century jar from Biot, hand-thrown in warm terracotta with a broad, rolled collar above a rounded belly. The rim is finished with a soft celadon-green glaze that pools and drips with subtle variation, while the body remains unglazed in tawny, sunbaked tones. The surface bears a rich mineral patina, with chips to the rim, glaze losses, and scattered scuffs that enhance its rustic character. Small jars of this size are especially rare, adding to its appeal.
The town of Biot, near Antibes, became celebrated from the 17th through the 19th century for producing robust vessels made to store olive oil and provisions in cool storerooms. Their rounded profile provided stability and generous capacity, while the glazed collar and interior resisted moisture and pests, combining practical durability with quiet decorative beauty.
This petite example serves as a sculptural accent indoors or out. It may stand at an entry to hold umbrellas or dried branches, or act as a cache-pot with a discreet liner for a citrus or olive tree by the door. Its soft celadon lip and weathered terracotta complement Mediterranean, farmhouse, and coastal interiors, and it pairs gracefully with larger jars or stone elements on a terrace or in a garden room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
