This set of eleven handmade fish-form ceramic plates originates from Dieulefit, a renowned pottery town in northern Provence, circa 1960. Each plate features a streamlined silhouette with an oval well, a ribbed tail, and a relief round eye in chocolate brown set against a sunny yellow glaze. The rims are finished with the warm brown edging characteristic of Dieulefit pottery, and the surfaces display the pleasing irregularities of artisanal production. The undersides bear a stamped Dieulefit mark. The condition is very good, with fine overall craquelure and a few small scattered rim nicks.
In the mid twentieth century, Dieulefit, long a center of French pottery, became especially celebrated for its ateliers where artisans blended rustic traditions with clean, modern lines. This fish-shaped tableware reflects that spirit, with a simplified form that captures the mid-century taste for bold graphic shapes over elaborate ornament. The bright yellow glaze recalls the vibrant Provençal palette, while the design itself, intended for serving seafood, make this set perfectly suited to the relaxed and convivial style of coastal entertaining.
These plates bring instant charm to a seaside house or to any kitchen that welcomes color. They can be used as appetizer or salad plates on a summer table with white linens and clear glass. When grouped on a wall or placed on a dresser, they create a playful school-of-fish effect.
