A small Louis XVI period French mirror, late 18th century, finely carved in giltwood and retaining its original mercury glass. The nicely proportioned rectangular frame displays the restrained neoclassical vocabulary of the reign, with a delicate running rais-de-cœur motif to the outer border and a classic beaded inner molding framing the plate, lending crisp rhythm and refined ornament to the design. Water gilding over warm red bole lends depth and soft luminosity. The plate remains notably clear with very light foxing, a few faint vertical age lines, and slight peripheral bloom. The gilding is attractively timeworn, with small gesso losses and gentle rubbing at the high points, yet it remains remarkably bright and luminous.
This mirror brings a poised note to an entry above a console, lends grace to a powder room, or anchors a mantel with a pair of wall lights. The clear plate remains fully functional for a bathroom or powder room where clarity is essential, while the bright gilding and refined classical ornament bring a touch of French elegance to any interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
