Designed by Roger Capron in Vallauris, this long rectangular Herbier model coffee table dates from the 1960s to early 1970s. Its sand and ochre ceramic tiles are decorated with fired-in botanical impressions of leaves and sprigs, arranged in alternating panels. The short sides are bordered with rounded edge tiles, adding a refined finish. The top rests on a dark-stained oak base of solid, architectural form with cross stretchers joined by tenons, typical of Capron’s collaboration with local woodworkers.
Signed Capron on the surface, this table remains in good vintage condition, showing gentle wear, small edge chips, and light marks to the base. Capron, a leading figure of the Vallauris ceramic school, developed the Herbier series by pressing real plants into clay, then washing the relief with oxides before firing to fix the silhouette. His atelier combined modernist lines with artisanal savoir-faire, and the naturalistic motifs reflect the Provençal landscape that inspired postwar French ceramics.
This low, elongated table adds an organic note to living rooms, garden rooms, or a library seating area. Its neutral palette pairs effortlessly with linen upholstery, warm woods, and terracotta, and it sits comfortably in mid-century, Provençal, or rustic schemes.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
