A compact circular mortar basin in reconstituted stone, dating to the second half of the 20th century. The thick-walled form features opposing lug handles and a deep well with a central pierced drain, allowing it to serve as a wash basin. The interior retains tool marks and incised lettering, adding character to its utilitarian presence. The mottled grey and chalky white surfaces are rough and uneven, showing natural outdoor patination with faint moss traces, underscoring its rustic appeal.
Cast stone gained prominence in the early to mid-20th century as a durable, economical alternative to hand-carved limestone for garden and household vessels. This example takes inspiration from traditional rural mortars, where lug handles aided lifting and pouring, while the pierced base made it especially practical for draining water in courtyards or kitchens.
Today, it lends character to terraces, entry courts, and garden rooms as a planter for lavender, rosemary, or sculptural succulents. Placed beneath a spigot, it can serve as a water feature. It also works as a rustic sculptural vessel indoors, bringing a grounded, timeworn presence to both contemporary and traditional settings.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
