This set of six provincial armchairs, dating to the early 19th century, combines warmth of material with inviting scale. Each chair is crowned with a broad arcaded crest rail above twin baluster splats, the generous scrolled arms resting on shaped supports. The frames, in mellow fruitwood feature a bowed front apron, turned front legs with unusual, elegant square feet, and rear saber legs. Original rush seats remain beneath newly made box cushions in deep teal linen with cognac piping, while two chairs feature rush seats woven with green straw in cross motifs, a detail introduced during later restorations.. The set is well-proportioned and comfortable. The rush seats are sound despite some age related wear, and the new cushions are are carefully finished.
Ideal around a farmhouse, the six create an inviting, collected look in a kitchen, garden room, or country dining space. Their mellow timber and quiet curves temper stone, plaster, and linen, while the blue green cushions introduce a soft note of color. Use individually as desk or library chairs, or group four at table and place the remaining pair in an entry or sitting room to extend the material harmony throughout the house
