A cheerful set of twelve asparagus plates in glazed majolica circa 1900. Each plate is relief-molded with bunches of pale asparagus tipped in soft violet, resting on lush green leaves and framed by a straw-colored basketweave ground with a scalloped rim washed in pale aqua. The plates show subtle variations in tone that reflect their hand-painted production. They are in good condition, with light wear consistent with age, including minor rim chips. Unsigned, the style and palette are consistent with the output of French majolica manufactories such as Salins-les-Bains or related eastern French workshops active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Asparagus plates rose to popularity during this period, designed specifically for serving the seasonal course with sauce and celebrated by European potteries for their sculptural modeling, playful naturalism, and vibrant color.
For the table, pair them with simple linens and clear glass to let the colors sing, making them ideal for spring lunches. When not in use, display the set as a plate wall, on open shelves, or in a cabinet, where the textures and verdant tones add freshness to a kitchen, dining room, or garden room. Their playful subject and refined relief bring a welcoming, collected note to both traditional and contemporary settings.
