A striking set of twelve octagonal plates by Milon of Dieulefit, Drôme, dating to the 1950s, finished in a richly variegated cobalt-blue glaze ranging from deep sapphire to lighter azure tones. Each plate features a wide rim accented by a finely molded beaded border that lends refinement to the straightforward geometric form. The luminous glaze displays subtle tonal variation and pooling, enhancing the depth and vibrancy of the color. Stamped Milon to the reverse. Condition is good overall, with light utensil marks and scattered fine crazing consistent with age and use.
Renowned for its long pottery tradition, Dieulefit became particularly celebrated in the mid-20th century for ceramics that balanced regional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities. These plates exemplify that approach, pairing a crisp octagonal silhouette with a saturated monochrome glaze of remarkable intensity. The rich cobalt-blue color is notably less common than the green and yellow glazes more typically associated with Dieulefit pottery, making this service especially distinctive.
Whether set on a table or displayed as a collection along a mantel, on open shelves, or across a wall, these plates bring the color and clarity of the Mediterranean indoors. The intense cobalt glaze seems to deepen and lighten with the changing light, while the octagonal silhouettes and beaded borders lend structure and refinement to the composition.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
