This superb Louis XIII mirror dates from the seventeenth century. It is from the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. Known as a "cache bible" as there is a hidden compartment built into the back of the frame for hiding the Bible. This originated during the Wars of Religion during the 16th century.

"Cache Bible" mirrors are an historical artifact from the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century. They were specifically designed with hidden compartments to conceal Bibles and other religious materials. During this period, owning a French Bible was often banned due to religious conflicts between the Catholic majority and the Protestant Huguenots. The mirrors provided a way to secretly maintain and protect personal religious beliefs under oppressive conditions. These mirrors are noted for their intricate designs, blending functionality with the aesthetic standards of the time. The concealed storage compartment was integrated seamlessly into the frame, maintaining the mirror's decorative purpose while serving its protective role. Today, "Cache Bible" mirrors are poignant reminders of religious perseverance and the innovative ways people safeguarded their freedoms against persecution.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
