This rare, small-scale 19th-century Biot olive jar beautifully embodies the rustic elegance and utilitarian craftsmanship of Provençal pottery. Handmade in the historic village of Biot—renowned since the Middle Ages for its distinctive earthenware—this jar was originally used to store olives and olive oil, essential staples of the Mediterranean table.

Characterized by its generous, bulbous silhouette and sturdy, wide-rimmed opening, the jar’s form was designed to keep its contents cool and protected. The upper section is coated in a rich, warm-toned glaze, subtly weathered with age, while the lower portion remains unglazed, showcasing the natural patina and soft earthy hues of the clay. Surface imperfections, minor chips, and light craquelure attest to its authentic history and add to its charming, timeworn character.

A timeless piece that brings Provençal heritage to modern interiors, this olive jar makes a striking decorative accent in a kitchen, garden room, or entryway. A second, similar jar is available for separate purchase here (see last photo).
