Petite Savoyard glazed earthenware creamer with a bulbous body, strap handle, and flared mouth with a pinched pouring lip. The surface carries a warm ocher glaze encircled by an interlaced beige and dark brown zigzag band, set on a small ring foot. Likely French, early 20th century. Condition is very good, timeworn from use with a tiny glaze chip at the rim, light wear to the foot, and scattered firing specks, no cracks observed.
Rooted in the alpine tradition of Savoie, this is classic terre vernissée, the regional lead-glazed earthenware prized for its rustic utility and lively decoration. The interlaced zigzag reads as simple barbotine slip work, a favored folk motif across rural workshops that produced everyday milk and cream vessels in the late 19th to early 20th century. Made from local red clays and colored with iron and manganese oxides, such pieces were often unmarked, their charm resting in honest craft and village savoir-faire.
Charming on a breakfast tray for milk or cream, it also works as a small vase for violets, herbs, or a fragrant posy. Style it on open kitchen shelves alongside other French country ceramics to bring warmth and texture, or place it on a bedside table or powder room counter as a petite accent that adds a soft, rustic note.
Light wear.
