A substantial pair of early 20th century French cast-iron street lamps, each rising from a broad stepped base cast with town armorial shields, through ringed collars to a tall shaft richly decorated with scrolling foliate sprays that climb its full height. Each column is crowned with a faceted capital supporting a four-sided lantern, likely later replacements. The layered black paint retains a deep matte patina, with traces of earlier coatings visible in the recesses. Weathered surfaces and light oxidation attest to long outdoor service, enhancing their authentic character. Solid and imposing in scale, the pair can be securely fixed to the ground, bringing strong architectural presence to a garden, driveway, or courtyard.
Handsome in scale yet elegantly proportioned, this pair brings the romance and authority of old French town streets into a private setting. Originally conceived for public illumination, their civic character and armorial bases evoke village squares and tree-lined boulevards. Placed flanking a garden gate, along an allée, or within a courtyard, they create a sense of arrival and quiet grandeur. Indoors, a single column could serve as a striking decorative accent in a conservatory or lofty entrance hall.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
No electrical wiring included.
