A striking handblown glass pedestal vase by master glassmaker Jean-Claude Novaro, signed and dated 1988. The boldly flared cup rises from a sculptural, ribbed baluster stem, the palette shifting from vivid sea green and celadon to a warm, sand-toned rim. Smoky metallic inclusions and sinuous marvered threads move freely through the body, lending an organic, Art Nouveau vitality, while the stem shimmers with deep blue-violet iridescence. Very good condition, with light surface wear to the rim and foot; the subtle irregularities are inherent to its artisanal, handblown nature.
Jean-Claude Novaro (1943–2014) was a leading glassmaker from Biot and a key figure in late 20th-century studio glass. Trained at the Verrerie de Biot, he later founded his own studio in 1977 and helped establish the town’s international reputation for artistic glass. Over decades of experimentation, Novaro developed distinctive techniques, notably incorporating gold, silver, and other metals into molten glass. From the 1980s onward, his pieces were exhibited widely across Europe, the United States, and Asia, and are now held in numerous public and private collections.
This piece stands out as a striking centerpiece on a dining table or console, its surface, inclusions, and shifting tones coming alive in changing light. It also makes a compelling addition to any studio glass collection.
