A superb pair of French Louis XIV giltwood frames, hand-carved in linden and likely made in Provence around 1700. Deeply carved clusters of grapes, flowers, fruit, and foliage punctuate the corners of the molded profiles, creating a rich but well-balanced composition. The generous relief gives the carving a lively sculptural quality, while the finely incised inner border adds a more delicate note of refinement. The two frames were conceived as companions rather than exact matches: their carved motifs vary subtly and their dimensions differ by approximately one to two centimeters. Both retain their beautiful original gilding, with gentle wear and small losses that do little to diminish its warm, luminous presence.
The combination of brilliant aged gold and abundant fruit-and-flower carving gives the pair exceptional decorative character. They would be especially appealing framing a pair of still lifes, particularly in a dining room, where the grapes, fruit, and floral motifs would create a subtle dialogue with the subject matter. Displayed together, their slight differences bring rhythm and individuality while maintaining the coherence of a true decorative pair.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
