This sculptural wrought-iron table lamp, likely French and dating to the 1930s or 1940s, features a tall slender stem encircled by two hand-forged serpents that coil upward with raised heads toward an early brass socket. Their bodies are worked with subtle hammering and twists that catch the light. The lamp stands on a cruciform base formed from arched strap-iron legs terminating in small scrolled feet, with visible riveted joinery and a dark gunmetal patina. It is unsigned and retains an appealing aged surface. The design reflects the interwar tradition of French decorative ironwork, when artist-blacksmiths created expressive lighting for modern interiors.
The serpentine coils recall the sinuous lines of late Art Nouveau, while the pared architectural base aligns with Art Deco sensibilities. Similar vocabulary can be seen in the work of renowned ateliers such as Edgar Brandt, Raymond Subes, and Paul Kiss. The serpent motif, long associated with protection and renewal in European decorative arts, adds sculptural drama, while the evident hammer work and forged curves highlight artisanal skill.
Ideal as a statement piece on a console, sideboard, or library table, the lamp introduces a moody silhouette and tactile patina to both contemporary and traditional rooms. A simple parchment or linen shade emphasizes its verticality while keeping attention on the entwined serpents. The dark iron grounds warm woods, stone, and leather, making it a striking accent for an entry hall, living room, or study.
