A whimsical pair of French wrought-iron chairs, forged and welded by hand, circa 1940s, likely a unique commission from a provincial atelier. The backs form a stylized feline mask, complete with triangular ears, curled whiskers, and a gracefully coiled tail. The seats rest on four slender, outward-curving tapered legs terminating in small stylized paw feet, reinforcing the playful motif. The iron retains its original deep blue finish, softly abraded in places, with gentle oxidation that speaks to their age and authenticity. The structure is solid and stable. The seats sit slightly higher than standard, offering a well-proportioned yet subtly elevated perch. The upholstery is a later replacement.
These lyrical forms marry skilled blacksmithing with imaginative design. The cat motif recalls the lighthearted spirit that threaded its way from late Art Deco into the postwar years, when handworked iron embraced scrolls, arcs, and expressive silhouettes. The graphic iron silhouette catches the light and casts a striking cat-shaped shadow that animates the wall behind.
Ideal as sculptural occasional chairs flanking a console in an entry hall, or positioned at either end of a table in a kitchen, they bring charm without affectation. Reupholster the seats in natural linen, saddle leather, or a patterned textile to suit the setting, and let their graphic silhouette and poetic interplay of light and shadow lend character to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
