A whimsical Vallauris candlestick from the mid 20th century, formed in glazed earthenware and sculpted to resemble a stylized cluster of budding branches. Three gently curving arms rise from a low organic base in a tiered arrangement, creating a balanced and sculptural three light form. Each arm is pierced at the top to hold a candle. The surface is finished in a rich glossy brown glaze streaked with darker tones that evoke the natural grain of wood. Small applied circular accents in pale green punctuate the branches, suggesting budding knots and adding a playful decorative contrast. The modeling is expressive yet simple, reflecting the relaxed and imaginative spirit that characterized Vallauris ceramics during the 1950s and 1960s, when the town gained international recognition for its bold and inventive pottery.
The underside bears a molded mark reading “A. Ferlay Vallauris,” identifying the piece as a production of the workshop of Albert Ferlay (1907–1996). Active in Vallauris during the mid 20th century, Ferlay created playful ceramic objects that reflect the creative energy of the town’s celebrated pottery revival in the 1950s and 1960s. His work often draws inspiration from nature, as seen in this whimsical branch form rendered in glossy earthenware glaze.
Nicely proportioned and visually dynamic, the candlestick reads t like a small playful sculpture. The branching arms hold candles as intended, though they can also display slender stems or small dried flowers.
