"The French are not taught to stack — and that drives me nuts," Patricia exclaims. For someone who has spent decades teaching in kitchens on both sides of the Atlantic, the practicalities of tableware matter as much as its beauty, and these ten white ceramic square plates from Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter's farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine, deliver both in equal measure.
Each plate is square with gently undulating edges that give the impression of fabric caught mid-billow — a linen napkin, perhaps, or a cloth draped loosely over a surface. The glaze is a clean, matte white with a softness that reads almost textile rather than ceramic. And crucially, they stack beautifully.
On a table, they suit almost anything placed on them: a composed salad, a slice of tart, a few good cheeses. Stacked on an open shelf in a kitchen, they are as pleasing to look at as they are to use.
