This richly carved wall bracket is made from wood, painted in a deep reddish tone and gilded on the relief, creating a beautiful contrast that emphasizes the flowing scrollwork, acanthus-like foliage and deeply modeled curves. The surface is richly aged, with worn gilding, exposed red paint and darker areas giving the carving considerable depth. A carved inscription reading 1648 is visible on the top, together with further partially legible lettering.
Old wormholes, small losses and surface irregularities give the wood a beautifully timeworn character, while the aged paint and gilding reinforce the sense of its long history. A later felt covering has been applied to the top around the inscription, likely to protect the carving from objects placed on the shelf; it shows some wear and a small area of damage at one corner. The back appears to have been recessed at a later date to accommodate a more secure hanging system, with two metal plates screwed into the wood and fitted with vertical slots for wall mounting.
Its deep red paint and worn gilding would add warmth, depth and rhythm to a layered wall in a library, hallway or dining room, creating a natural perch for a small bronze, ceramic vessel or candle among paintings, mirrors and collected objects.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
