This sculptural eagle, dating to the 17th century and cast in gilded lead, commands attention with wings outstretched, its finely modeled form conveying vigilance, authority, and ceremonial gravitas. The bird spreads its wings wide, with carefully articulated feathers, a proud, alert head, and sharp talons gripping a small perch. Such eagles traditionally crowned church lecterns, and the form and scale of this piece suggest it was likely created for that purpose. The surface bears a rich, darkened patina with remnants of layered gilding that continue to catch the light. The condition is timeworn and consistent with age: the wings, being the most delicate elements, show losses and old restorations that do not detract from the sculpture’s beauty but attest to its fragility and call for careful handling. The piece has been fitted with a hook for wall mounting.
In ecclesiastical tradition, the eagle lectern held a powerful symbolic role. Associated with Saint John the Evangelist and the ascent of the Word toward heaven, the eagle was commonly used as a support for sacred texts, its outstretched wings embodying vigilance, authority, and divine inspiration. Sculptural eagles such as this were designed to command attention within a church interior, combining symbolic meaning with striking visual presence. This dramatic piece brings gravitas to an entry, library, or overmantel, where its gold tones add warmth and quiet splendor. Mount it on a painted panel above a console or between bookcases to echo its possible liturgical past, or contrast it with contemporary pieces for a striking focal point.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
