This exquisite wooden sculpture of Saint Francis of Assisi dates from the seventeenth-century and is most likely Spanish. He was the patron saint of Italy, then later animals and the natural environment. Very timeworn walnut with woodworm holes and some paint remaining. Originally displayed in a church or chapel. The hand has been repaired with wire and can be removed.
