17th Century Traveling Writing Desk on Turned Base - 33½" x 37"

A rare and evocative 17th century portable writing desk resting on an elegantly turned wooden base. Designed for travel and practicality, the upper writing cabinet can be completely separated from its stand for transport, an ingenious construction that reflects the mobility and functionality valued in early domestic furniture.

The beautifully patinated wood displays deep warm tones and a rich surface shaped by centuries of use. The slanted writing top is decorated with restrained geometric marquetry details that lend subtle refinement to the otherwise sober form. The turned legs and stretchers give the piece a strong sculptural presence while maintaining compact proportions. The sloping upper section lifts upward to reveal a simple interior fitted with small drawers intended for storing papers, correspondence, and writing supplies. The front panel does not open downward to create a writing surface. Instead, writing was intended to take place directly on the closed slanted top, where a small projecting ledge prevents papers, notebooks, or volumes from slipping.

The desk retains an honest and untouched character, with age-related marks, small restorations, shrinkage cracks, surface wear, and irregularities consistent with its age, all contributing to its authenticity and atmosphere. The structure remains sturdy and stable, though the desk no longer locks. A useful drawer integrated into the lower base provides additional storage, reinforcing the practical nature of the piece.
