1875 Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Pitcher w/ Applied Floral Decoration - 9¾"

This handsome Doulton Lambeth stoneware pitcher is dated 1875 and bears the impressed factory mark beneath the base. Its tall, gently tapering body is covered in a rich warm-brown glaze and densely decorated with rows of applied floral rosettes, picked out in blue-gray and cream with tiny raised dots between them. Cobalt-blue bands around the neck and foot give definition to the form, while the long loop handle and subtly shaped pouring lip preserve the practical character of the vessel beneath its elaborate surface decoration. The pitcher remains in very good antique condition, with the slight variations in glaze and relief that give early Doulton stoneware its distinctive hand-crafted quality.

The date places this piece within an important early period of Doulton’s Lambeth art pottery. From the 1860s, the factory worked closely with artists trained at the nearby Lambeth School of Art, transforming its reputation from a maker of utilitarian stoneware into one of Britain’s most inventive ceramic workshops. The repeated applied flowers and richly textured surface are characteristic of this new decorative approach, in which traditional salt-glazed stoneware became a vehicle for increasingly intricate hand-work. 

Its tall proportions, richly textured surface and warm brown-and-blue palette give the pitcher a particularly decorative presence. It would look beautiful on a warm wooden sideboard, with a fresh bouquet or simply displayed on its own as a richly textured example of 19th-century craftsmanship.
