This striking antique three-part wardrobe in fir presents an architectural façade with a deep molded cornice over twin fielded panel doors flanked by spiral twist pilasters. Carved details include a cherub head to the upper corners and bold grotesque masks to the lower blocks above bun feet, the carvings softened by age. The honeyed blond timber shows lively grain and a dry, tactile surface, with traces of old polychromy adding depth and character. Handwrought iron escutcheons frame a period lock, which retains its impressive internal bolt-and-latch mechanism with decorative engraving. Inside are two later fixed-height shelves that replaced the originals. A timeworn surface showing gentle wear, with minor shrinkage and losses, enriches its authentic patina and charm.
Inspired by the Renaissance and Louis XIV period, the design is here translated into provincial craftsmanship and conceived as painted furniture rather than veneered cabinetry. Its sectional construction and use of fir or pine link it to upland and eastern France as well as the Alpine regions of Tyrol, Switzerland, Southern Germany, and Northern Italy. Within these rural traditions of the early to mid-18th century, Baroque forms were reinterpreted with rustic character and enlivened by polychrome finishes, bringing both durability and decorative richness to everyday interiors.
Its generous scale makes a striking anchor in an entry, living room, or primary bedroom, where the warm pine and sculptural carving add depth to neutral schemes and balance stone, plaster, or painted walls. Use it as a linen press, a pantry cabinet, or concealed media storage, allowing the architectural front to read as a focal point. The timeworn surface partners beautifully with modern upholstery and simple ceramics, while the interior shelves invite orderly storage or a curated display.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
