18th Century Dutch Serpentine Commode w/ Distressed Patina - 31½" x 51½"

Gracefully serpentine in profile, this wide Dutch three-drawer commode is a mid-18th-century piece with a shaped top edged by a chamfer and long drawers that follow the fluid front. Crafted in fir wood, it showcases a pale grey patinated surface that reads as old paint worn back through years of use. Pierced iron keyhole escutcheons remain, though only the middle drawer retains its lock and key, while the wooden knob pulls are later replacements. The drawers slide rather smoothly, and the piece is finished with a shaped apron and compressed bun feet. Scattered surface wear, age cracks at the joints, and softened edges consistent with age enhance its rustic character.

The form reflects Dutch Rococo taste, where the Baroque love of movement evolved into fluid serpentine and bombe contours, with provincial workshops producing painted softwood versions such as this, valued for their sturdy practicality; the chamfered top, sinuous drawer rails, squat bun feet are hallmarks of Northern European craftsmanship of the 18th century, when such commodes served in bedchambers or reception rooms beneath mirrors, candles, or Delftware.
