A splendid carved, footed display stand with a gilded Sacré-Cœur flaming heart from the eighteenth century, France. The sides are painted with a skillful technique employed to emulate green marble known as faux marbre. The edges are gilded which has worn over time to reveal traces of its red gesso beneath. Perhaps used in a religious setting such as a personal home chapel due to its intimate scale and the symbolism of the Sacré-Cœur or "sacred heart" motif in the center.
The flaming heart design with rays of light behind it is often used as a symbolic reference to the heart of Jesus. Note also the four large lion's paw feet which grace the corners. This would make a superb decorative pedestal atop a table to display a bust sculpture, large candle, or other decorative object.
