18th-Century French Giltwood Miroir de Mariage - 37½" x 24¾"

A charming late 18th-century French miroir de mariage (marriage mirror) in carved wood with its original painted and water-gilded finish, retaining its original mercury glass. The rectangular frame is richly ornamented with finely ribbed uprights, a delicate beaded inner molding, carved corner rosettes, scrolling acanthus, and an elegant crest centred by a classical urn overflowing with flowers.

The gilding has mellowed beautifully over time, developing a rich, softly worn patina that highlights the finely carved decoration, with a few discreet restorations. The original mercury plate displays scattered areas of desilvering, lending the reflection remarkable depth and authenticity. The crest has a small loss at the top, likely where one of the carved flowers or decorative elements from the overflowing urn has broken away, though this is discreet and does little to detract from the mirror's overall appearance. The frame retains its original painted projecting lower wooden extensions, integral to its original construction and a testament to traditional period craftsmanship. Overall, the mirror presents in good antique condition with an honest, beautifully timeworn character. 

Offered to the newlyweds to celebrate their marriage, miroirs de mariage were among the most cherished furnishings of the late 18th-century home.
