This handsome French faience flask was likely made in Nevers during the 18th century. This substantial French faience flask was likely made in Nevers during the 18th century. Its rounded, slightly flattened body is fitted with four small passants and rises to a short central neck, a form closely associated with Nevers travel and presentation flasks of the period. The white tin glaze is painted in the characteristic grand feu palette of blue, green, ochre-yellow and dark manganese tones. On one face, a figure identified by the inscription as Saint Bartholomew is painted within an architectural frame, holding the knife traditionally associated with his martyrdom; the reverse is decorated with a freer vegetal composition. The hand-painted decoration retains an appealing immediacy, with subtle variations in line and color that reveal the spontaneity of the painter’s brushwork. The neck has been cut and bears an old, clearly visible restoration.

Nevers became one of France’s foremost faience centers from the 17th century onward, and by the 18th century its workshops were producing an especially rich range of devotional and patronymic wares. Gourds decorated with saints are well documented, sometimes pairing a religious figure on one face with a landscape, floral motif or inscription on the other. Such pieces reflect both the strong devotional culture of the period and the growing desire to personalize fine domestic ceramics.
