An 18th century Italian wingback armchair, this generous Rococo fauteuil is hand-carved in beech with animated cabriole legs, scrolled knees, and a shaped stretcher that mirrors the fluid movement of the frame. The surface retains a pale, chalky patina, with traces of old gilt and gesso nestled within the carving, revealing its layered history and long life. The upholstery is unrestored: a sea-green fabric, now worn and frayed, partially covers the original foundation. Exposed jute webbing, horsehair stuffing, and hand-stitched edge rolls provide a rare and evocative glimpse into traditional 18th century upholstery techniques. Wear to the rails and textile is consistent with age. Structurally sound, the chair is ready to be reupholstered to suit its next setting.
This presents a wonderful opportunity to upholster entirely to one’s taste, whether in understated linen, rich velvet, or patterned silk, allowing the piece to be tailored to a specific interior. Equally, in its current state, the visible layers and raw textures lend a poetic, atelier-like quality that celebrates process and timeworn authenticity.

Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
