This captivating French mirror dates from the Regence (eighteenth-century) period and features its original mercury glass mirror and delightful sculpted giltwood frame. Note the pretty carved flowers and decorative gilded plasterwork representing a typical Provençal-style designs. This mirror comes from a Hôtel particulier (grand French home/mansion) in the south of France and would be a fabulous addition to add French charm to your interiors.
Note the mirror allows one to see one's reflection despite the foxing to its patina. Note the frame and mirror glass are both original to the 1700s and shows some signs of age and losses to plaster pieces on frame. This mirror contains its original mercury glass which sparkles beautifully in the light. The technique of making mercury glass mirrors was retired in the early 1900s. The mercury is fixed behind the glass in a solidified, non harmful state.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
