This tall, narrow bonnet cupboard from the 18th century, made in linden wood, embodies the stark simplicity of provincial craft. The single door, framed by robust stiles and rails with two fielded panels, sits beneath a projecting cornice and above a plinth with a lower drawer fitted with a turned wooden pull. The surface has developed a deeply rustic character, darkened to a rich oxidized brown with traces of earlier finishes and a subdued matte sheen from centuries of wear. Parts of the surface have taken on an almost geological character, its softened edges and timeworn planes testifying to long and practical service. Condition is authentically aged, with a restored drawer front and two more recent interior shelves, along with scattered abrasions and surface irregularities that underscore its elemental, enduring presence.
