This 18th-century Venetian armchair combines an imposing, almost ceremonial silhouette with particularly elaborate carving. Its tall, narrow back is framed by twisted uprights and richly carved foliate scrollwork, echoed in the shaped arms, ornamental front stretcher and boldly scrolled feet. The wooden frame retains a dark painted finish with gilded decoration, both extensively worn, with losses and exposed underlying layers creating a richly textured, picturesque patina. The chair has been reupholstered in beautiful rose-colored fabric by Rubelli, the renowned Venetian textile house. Its antique-style floral pattern sits naturally alongside the aged painted finish, while the quality of the textile brings a refined touch to the restoration. Both the upholstered seat and back panels are removable for easier maintenance. The chair has a wonderfully expressive, almost sculptural quality. The elaborate carving is made all the more interesting by the irregular, timeworn finish, with traces of gilding emerging through the dark paint and emphasizing the depth of the ornament. The softly patterned rose upholstery introduces a pleasing contrast, balancing the exuberance of the frame with a more delicate texture and color. With its tall silhouette and richly worked profile, the chair would be particularly effective standing alone in an entrance hall, beside a fireplace or against a pale wall, where its decorative details can be fully appreciated. Although the chair remains stable and solid, we recommend occasional, gentle use or primarily decorative display given its age.
