A Belle Époque French advertising calendar, dated 1905 and issued by the early department store "Aux Deux Passages" in Lyon, this charming piece of ephemera is printed by chromolithography on stiff card with a pale blue arabesque border. The central vignette, titled An Important Secret, depicts two children confiding beside a garden wall, rendered in soft olive, russet, and lavender tones with village rooftops beyond. The store’s imprint appears at the lower margin. The surface shows gentle toning, a small hanging puncture at the top, light foxing and faint edge wear, and the calendar is complete as issued, overall in good and authentically timeworn condition.
Such gift calendars were a hallmark of Belle Époque retail culture, presented to patrons as tokens of loyalty and taste. Chromolithography, layered color from multiple stones to achieve the velvety gradients and painterly depth seen here, a technique prized by French printers at the turn of the century.
The sentimental genre scene reflects the period’s affection for pastoral imagery while revealing the emerging use of illustration and typography as tools of visual identity and commercial distinction.
Imbued with nostalgic warmth, it lends a poetic note to a study, library wall, or a child’s room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
