This French Art Deco floor lamp, dating from around the 1930s, is crafted in wrought iron with a dark black patina. Its tall, tapering stem is formed from textured, hand-worked iron bars, framing a beautiful arrangement of vine leaves and clusters of grapes. At the top, three sweeping arms end in tight scrolls with suspended teardrop ornaments, framing a wide, shallow bowl in pale pâte de verre, which may not be original to the lamp. The base rests on three boldly curled feet, also decorated with a hammered texture. The iron shows light wear consistent with age, and a small, discreet repair has been made to one of the grape clusters.
This lamp is a lovely example of France's rich tradition of decorative ironwork, combining the bold lines of Art Deco with a pale pâte de verre bowl, a material closely associated with lighting of the period. We particularly like how the open construction keeps the tall design feeling light and airy, while the softly frosted glass, with its subtle gray speckling and concentric bands, provides a beautiful contrast to the dark, textured iron and diffuses the light into a gentle glow. It would make a striking addition to a library, sitting room or entrance hall.
