This charming little French office sign, dating from around the 1930s, is made from painted sheet metal with a beautifully shaped outline and bold, colorful lettering. The word “BUREAU” is painted in large yellow capitals with black and green shadowing against a deep blue background. Beneath it, an elegantly drawn hand with an extended index finger points to the left, adding a playful note to an otherwise practical sign. In the lower right corner is the signature of the peintre en lettres, or sign painter, a reminder of the skilled artisans who once hand-painted shop signs, storefront lettering and advertisements throughout France. Four holes, one near each corner, allow it to be mounted on a wall or door. The surface shows scattered oxidation, scratches and paint losses, but the lettering and illustration remain very clear and legible.
There is a lovely sense of humor in the pointing hand, while the strong typography and rich colors give this little sign plenty of graphic character. Its weathered surface adds to its authentic vintage charm. It would make a delightful addition to a home office or study, hung on a door or above a desk, but could also find a place in a hallway or gallery wall, mixed with paintings, prints and other curiosities.
