This handsome French architect's cabinet, dating from the 1940s, is crafted from oak, with six wide, relatively shallow drawers originally designed for storing architectural drawings and plans flat. Its simple rectangular form is softened by a slightly projecting top with rounded corners, paneled sides and decorative metal cup handles. The oak has a beautiful warm, reddish-brown patina, with pronounced grain and variations in tone. An interesting feature is the hinged vertical bar on one side, designed to fold across the fronts of all six drawers and secure them with a single lock. The original key has been lost, so the drawers can no longer be locked. The wood shows scratches, small knocks and darker areas of wear, which enrich its patina and give the piece a relaxed, lived-in character.
Originally designed as a practical piece of office furniture, this cabinet has a lovely, understated industrial character, balanced by the warmth of the patina. Its generous storage capacity makes it an excellent choice for a home office or an artist's studio, holding papers, drawings and supplies. It would also work beautifully in a bedroom for clothing and linens, or in a living room, with magazines, family photographs and children's drawings neatly stored in the drawers, while its broad top provides a lovely surface for displaying ceramics, books or artwork.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
