A workshop step ladder from the 1940s to 1950s, this nicely proportioned piece combines a slender painted iron frame with broad wooden treads. The splayed legs, cross-bracing, and simple top handhold reflect purposeful industrial design, while the iron shows an oxidized brown-black hue with scattered paint loss and the timber steps reveal a pale, sun-bleached grain. It remains functional and stable, presenting in good timeworn condition with surface rust, rubbed edges, old stains from workshop use.
Ladders of this type were used in workshops and storerooms where durability and practicality were essential, reflected in their straightforward construction. It carries the tactile memory of workbenches and daylight-filled workshops, its weathered surfaces recording decades of everyday use.
Today this piece reads as sculptural and graphic. Place it in a kitchen or library beside open shelving, where it can help reach higher pantry or book shelves while lending vertical interest, or let it anchor a garden room with potted herbs and woven baskets. It works beautifully as a display for folded linens or throws, introducing authentic industrial character and a gentle patina that softens contemporary interiors.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
