A mid-20th-century travel trunk, likely French and dating to the 1950s, constructed with a wood frame and reinforced lid fitted with three raised battens. The exterior is clad in a crocodile-patterned covering in rich tobacco and deep chocolate tones, giving it a handsome, textured presence. Riveted brass-toned corner mounts and strapping protect the edges, while blackened iron latches and a central lock plate emphasize its utilitarian character. Leather side carry handles complete the original fittings. The interior is neatly lined in a checked paper in warm brown and cream tones. The surface shows an attractive, well-earned patina with scuffs, rubbed edges, and light oxidation to the hardware, all consistent with travel use. Despite minor age-related cracks to the wooden structure, it presents in timeworn yet sturdy condition, retaining the character and quiet romance of mid-century journeys. The keys are no longer present.
Well scaled for a coffee table, it offers generous hidden storage for bottles or magazines in the living room, and it works equally well at the foot of a bed to hold cushions or sheets. A flat tray on the ribbed lid keeps glassware steady while protecting the surface, and the piece can also anchor an entry as a handsome spot to store scarves and seasonal layers. Its mellow browns and rugged texture bring a grounded, quietly adventurous mood, pairing effortlessly with linen upholstery, leather chairs, and warm woods for a timeless, layered interior.
