This 1950s French school wall chart depicts a lively postwar schoolyard printed in soft terracotta, clay pink, sage, and slate tones with delicate line work. The color offset lithograph is mounted in a later slender stained wood frame under glass and shows a courtyard scene animated with children at play, boys on one side and girls on the other. Their clothing, from pinafores and knee socks to berets and short trousers, along with the traditional games of marbles, skipping rope, and hopscotch, vividly capture the era’s everyday life. At the lower left, the inscription “Tableau d’élocution” identifies the print as a teaching aid used to prompt classroom conversation and speech exercises.
Such charts encouraged pupils to describe what they saw, enriching both vocabulary and observation skills. The surface shows gentle age toning, light handling waves, and minor marks, with the colors softly mellowed.
Hung as art, this vintage school chart radiates warmth and nostalgia, bringing a cheerful, storybook quality to any space. It’s especially engaging in a playroom, child’s bedroom, or study, where its lively scene and gentle colors invite curiosity and conversation. The soft tones pair beautifully with natural woods and painted furniture, adding character and a sense of history to both classic and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
