This Italian demi-lune console, dating from the second half of the 20th century, is made from carved wood and painted throughout in an exuberant faux-marble finish. The half-moon top sits on a single turned pedestal with stylized foliate details, raised on four boldly curved feet. What really sets it apart is the all-over painted surface: broad cream and pale green veining runs across a deep gray ground, continuing over the top, pedestal and base, favoring decorative impact over a convincing imitation of stone.
That slightly exaggerated faux marble is exactly where the charm lies. The scale of the veining, the unexpected green-gray palette and the almost graphic treatment give the piece an exuberant, deliberately over-the-top decorative character. A crack is visible toward the rear of the top, together with light wear consistent with age, but neither detracts from its strong decorative presence.
Its shallow demi-lune form makes it particularly easy to place in an entryway, hallway or beneath a window in a living room, simply styled with a vase, lamp or small sculpture so the painted surface remains visible. It could sit against a pared-back backdrop and take center stage, or be pushed in the opposite direction within a more layered, opulent interior, where its exuberance would become part of the overall theatrical effect.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
