This small French side table from the 1960s features six hand-decorated glazed ceramic tiles framed in black iron with tapered legs. The ceramic tiles display abstract motifs, typical of the mid-century work by French ceramicists (twins) Jean Cloutier (1930–2015) and Robert Cloutier (1930–2008). Known for their experimental approach, the Cloutier brothers established their atelier in the 1950s and became recognized for their innovative designs that combined traditional ceramic techniques with modern, sculptural forms. This table is a fine example of their craftsmanship, capturing the essence of French mid-century ceramic art.
Jean and Robert Cloutier, twin brothers born on August 7, 1930, in Paris, were prominent French ceramicists and sculptors. After training at the École de céramique de Meaux and working with masters like Georges Jouve and Pol Chambost, they opened their own atelier in Paris in 1955. Known for their whimsical, often anthropomorphic and biomorphic designs, they specialized in utilitarian and decorative ceramics, such as vases, tiles, and architectural pieces. They relocated to Vinneuf in 1972 and later to Marsillargues. Robert passed away in 2008, and Jean in 2015, leaving behind a legacy in modern French ceramic art.
