This signed Provençal studio pottery pitcher from the 1960s is wheel-thrown in glazed terracotta with a rounded, globular body, a short neck, a flared scalloped lip, and a generous strap handle on a low ring foot. A round stopper sits neatly in the opening, an unusual feature for this form. The high-gloss glaze shifts from graphite and charcoal to moss and olive green, creating a soft metallic shimmer across the surface.
The shape follows traditional southern French pichets made for serving water or table wine, while the saturated, reflective glaze reflects the postwar ceramics revival across Provence in the 1950s and 60s. Workshops of the Midi, including those around Vallauris, embraced modernist curves and experimental color, blending vernacular forms with bold surface treatments. The presence of the stopper underscores its distinctive character, while the signature confirms atelier production and the savoir-faire of an individual potter.
Styled on a kitchen dresser or dining console, the glossy surface catches the light and adds depth to the setting. It also works beautifully as a sculptural accent on a mantel or as a vase for fresh blooms, bringing color and softness to its reflective glaze. The piece pairs gracefully with pale plaster, warm oak, and other green-glazed ceramics, evoking the relaxed charm of Provence.
