This charming white glazed earthenware umbrella stand, dating from around the 1970s, takes the form of a large owl with wide, round eyes, a pointed beak and beautifully modeled feathers. Its plump body rests on a small oval base, with the wings folded neatly along its sides. The glossy white finish highlights the detailed relief decoration and gives the piece a fresh, cheerful appearance. Unmarked, it is in lovely vintage condition, with just a small chip along the upper rim.
With its wide-eyed expression and generous, rounded proportions, this owl has a lovely sense of humor and plenty of personality. Designed as an umbrella stand or large floor vase, its relatively lightweight construction makes it best suited to decorative use. It could hold a generous arrangement of branches or flowers with a watertight insert, or simply be displayed empty on a sideboard, where its sculptural shape can be fully appreciated.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
